Our motivation

Why we do what we do

Too many filmmakers are waiting. Waiting to feel ready, waiting for the right gear, waiting for the right moment. That wait is the biggest obstacle in filmmaking; not lack of talent, not lack of resources. We started Filmmakers & Movie Nerds because we believe the only way through that wait is to create a space where starting is the default, and where the people around you make it easier to keep going.

Stop waiting – start creating!

What we do

We are a registered nonprofit organization (gemeinnütziger Verein e.V.), founded in 2022 and supported by partners across Berlin's creative and cultural sector.

We have been running one of the most active filmmaking communities in Berlin. Here, people actually make movies together. We host regular meetups, structured challenges, intensive sprints, screenings, focus groups, cultural events and workshops: all designed to get people together and move them from idea to finished film.

How we do it

Everything we do is community- and action-focused; built for people who show up and who want to get stuff done. Behind the community is a small, dedicated team, who founded Filmmakers & Movie Nerds. From the first meetups in cafés to where it stands today. A team of volunteers supports with events, communications, and operations, each contributing what they do best.

The community shows up to create.

The team makes sure there's something worth showing up for.

Non-profit

Since 2022, we've built one of Berlin's most active filmmaking communities from the ground up. And in the beginning of 2026 Filmmakers & Movie Nerds e.V. officially received the status as a registered nonprofit organization (AKA gemeinnütziger Verein).

Our mission is simple: give creatives the knowledge, skills and crew to express themselves with the medium of film.

We bring together people of all backgrounds and experience levels who share one thing: the drive to actually make films, not just talk about them.

We run regular events, structured challenges, and collaborative projects that have produced hundreds of meetups, industrial professional speaker events, multiple movie sprints, and more than a hundred of finished short films.

Everything we do is community-focused, built for people who are serious about making films, who show up, contribute, and collaborate.

We believe filmmaking should be accessible. Not just to those with industry connections, a rich uncle or formal training, but to anyone with the drive to actually make something: whether you're just starting out or have years of set experience.

Our initiatives are designed to lower barriers, build skills, and create real opportunities. We welcome filmmakers at every level. What we ask in return is that people show up with respect for the work, the community, and each other. We maintain clear community guidelines & code of conduct and take them seriously.

As a registered nonprofit, we operate with full transparency and a clear public benefit mandate. Our work supports cultural participation, creative education, and access to filmmaking, regardless of background or budget.

We are led by a voluntary board and structured to receive and responsibly manage public and private funding in support of our mission.
